Part D Beneficiaries Befuddled By New CMS Tool

Deadline issues mean not all data is in new online plan finder.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has a new educational tool for prospective Medicare Part D beneficiaries on its Web site, www.medicare.gov but the site might leave some customers without the information they need to find a plan.

The Prescription Drug Plan Finder is a tool for Medicare beneficiaries to compare prescription drug plans based on cost, coverage and convenience, according to an Oct. 17 CMS news release.

The Plan Finder will help beneficiaries determine whether they qualify for PDP-related financial assistance, whether their employer or union is continuing current drug coverage, or whether they're already enrolled in a Medicare plan.

The catch: Not all of the data is in the plan finder, because "the deadline for many employers to submit their applications is Oct. 31 and some applications for those beneficiaries applying for extra help have not been finalized," CMS explains.
