Leavett Gets HHS Post, Dorgan Gets Reimportation Hearing

Confirmation carries small consolation prize for some

In a Jan. 26 voice vote, the Senate confirmed former Utah governor Mike Leavett as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services.  Leavitt, who moves over from his current post as Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, succeeds Tommy Thompson.

It had appeared that Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-ND) might hold up a floor vote on Leavitt.  But that threat dissipated when Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) and Sen. Mike Enzi (R-WY) promised dorgan a hearing within 90 days. in Enzi's Health, Education. Labor, and Pensions Committee, on his bill to allow importation of less expensive prescription drugs from abroad
