Sixteen health plans are withdrawing from Medicare+Choice or reducing their service area, leaving 41,000 people to find new coverage for 2004, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services said Sept. 22. That's down sharply from the 217,000 enrollees who lost coverage as of Jan.1, 2003. Taking into account plans entering M+C and/or expanding their service areas this year, CMS expects a net increase in program enrollment. About 38,000 of those affected by the latest round of withdrawals will have another private plan available to them, according to CMS. Nearly 37,000 will have another M+C HMO available, over 1,000 will have a private-fee-for service option available, and just under 1,500 will be eligible to enroll in Medicare's preferred provider organization demonstration. Three thousand-plus beneficiaries will have no private-plan option and will have to return to traditional Medicare.
