MEDICAID:

Congressional Hearings Examine Medicaid Waste

Grassley wants answers on overspending.

The U.S. Senate has turned its attention to waste, fraud and abuse in the Medicaid program. The Senate Finance Committee held two days of hearings on the topic in June, which is gaining increased attention as Congress grapples with ways to rein in spending on the program.

"We have a duty to sustain Medicaid for low-income Americans, including children, pregnant women, individuals with disabilities and the elderly," said Chairman Charles Grassley (R-IA). "Coupled with this duty is a duty to taxpayers to ensure that monies spent on Medicaid are actually spent on patient care and not lost to fraud, waste and abuse."

Among those testifying were Inspector General Daniel Levinson, Government Accountability Office Director Leslie Aronowitz and Dennis Smith of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. For more details on the hearings, visit www.finance.senate.gov/sitepages/hearings.htm.
