AUDIOLOGISTS FACE NEW RULES FOR MEDICAID

Audiologists would have to meet a new set of requirements to provide services - including school-based care - to Medicaid recipients under a new proposal from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. In a rule published in the April 2 Federal Register, CMS proposed requiring audiologists to either A) be certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association; B) complete at least 350 hours of supervised clinical practice, perform 9 months of supervised full-time audiology services after obtaining a graduate degree, and pass an approved national examination in audiology; or C) meet state licensure requirements that are at least as stringent as those of the first two options. CMS says the rule is intended to make the participation requirements for Medicare and Medicaid more similar. To see the rule, go to http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs/fedreg/a030402c.html.
