The average Medicare+Choice enrollee is spending about $1,964 out-of-pocket this year, 10 percent more than last year and double the amount from four years ago. That's according to research conducted by Marcia Gold and Lori Achman of Mathematica Policy Research and reported in an August 11 Commonwealth Fund Issue Brief. In response, the American Association of Health Plans pointed out that Medicare+Choice participants are still spending almost $670 less out of pocket this year than fee-for-service Medicare beneficiaries are spending.
