Long-Term Care:

More Reimbursement On The Way For AIDS Patients

Long-term care facilities receive needed boost.

Nursing homes that treat AIDS patients will get more reimbursement for these high-cost patients -- as soon as this fall.

So promised Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Mark McClellan May 3. The pay hike - provided for in last year's Medicare reform bill -- is designed to reflect "the increased costs associated with caring for this special group of beneficiaries," McClellan says. "We want to take whatever steps are necessary to assure continued access to care for people living with AIDS."

Nursing homes will get an increase of 128 percent over their current payment rates, according to CMS. The agency has ordered fiscal intermediaries to institute the new rates as of Oct. 1.

Lesson Learned: Higher payment rates for residents with AIDS are on their way for nursing homes.
