Lackluster MIPS 2020 Data Causes Cost Category Reweighting

If you were worried about your Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) numbers for the performance year (PY) 2020, a recent update may put some spring in your step.

Now: On May 20, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that after analysis of the PY 2020 data the agency decided to reweight the cost category. “We will assign a weight of 0% to the cost performance category for the 2020 performance period and redistribute the prescribed weight of 15% to another performance category or categories,” an agency memo says.

Why? According to the memo, CMS didn’t receive as much MIPS data in the cost category from providers as they have in previous years. Due to this lack of information, the agency couldn’t properly calculate scores that would “reflect the performance of MIPS eligible clinicians,” the memo indicates.

No action is necessary on the part of MIPS providers as the cost category “relies on administrative claims data,” CMS says in the memo.
