Increased MACRA Interest Causes CMS to Reopen Advanced APM Applications

With MACRA’s final rule out for interpretation, CMS has been privy to much commentary and excitement about its new quality initiative, especially those related to the advanced APMs, which blend enhanced patient care with innovation and coordination. Making health care affordable while putting the focus back on the patient is at the core of MACRA’s QPP—and CMS is forging ahead with new options for providers in 2017 to ensure that the nation’s delivery of care is at its zenith.

“Every day, the CMS Innovation Center is improving the future of Medicare by testing innovative care models across the country,” said Andy Slavitt, CMS acting administrator, in an Oct. 25, 2016 news release. “Now, thanks to the bipartisan MACRA, clinicians have more opportunities and motivation to join these evidence-based approaches, which aim to improve care quality while creating cost savings.”

Starting in 2017, providers who participate in advanced APMs can earn a five percent incentive. Many of the opportunities are for specialists with options like the CMS Innovation Care Model in Oncology and the Comprehensive ESRD Care Model. But, the QPP also delivers with programs like the Comprehensive Primary Care Plus (CPC+)—an option that CMS offered a few months ago and is now reopening applications for practices and payers for the 2017 reporting year—which offers a broader outreach to a variety of primary care physicians.
