The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) finally has an official Administrator at its helm once again. President Biden announced Chiquita Brooks-LaSure as his nominee back in February, but the U.S. Senate confirmed her only on May 25. After an April 15 confirmation hearing, the Senate Finance Committee “failed to report favorably” on her nomination. The “no” votes from Republican senators appeared to be in response to CMS’ revocation of Texas’ 1115 Medicaid waiver. Brooks-LaSure formerly held positions at both the Office of Management and Budget and CMS. She will be the first Black woman to lead CMS and was sworn in on May 27. “Chiquita, an expert in health care policy and a veteran of CMS, will be a trusted steward of our nation’s health insurance programs and a critical partner as we tackle the nation’s health care challenges,” said HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra in a release.
