Recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Maria has prompted the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to push out the deadline for the Public Health Emergency (PHE) in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The PHE declaration extension gives Medicare providers more options for the delivery of care and lifts some federal healthcare regulations that cannot be met in the aftermath of the hurricane and utilizes the 1135 waiver under the Social Security Act. Deadlines: The 1135 waiver deadline for the U.S. Virgin Islands is now March 14, 2018, and Puerto Rico's is March 15, 2018.
