CMS Releases New PACE Guidance in Response to COVID-19

Plus: Push back non-essential care for beneficiaries, feds suggest.

The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) impacts everyone, but those with chronic disease are particularly vulnerable in the wake of the outbreak. A new Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) update for Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) Organizations (POs) addresses pandemic concerns.

Details: “CMS is putting out COVID-19 guidance to all types of healthcare providers and facilities. PACE is the latest area of focus because these organizations serve older adults who often have serious chronic medical conditions and therefore are at higher risk of serious illness from the virus,” a March 18 release says.

The PACE guidance includes the following advice and tips:

  • Infection control plan documentation
  • Respiratory illness monitoring
  • PACE personnel education on personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • POs and cases beyond compliance parameters
  • Guidance on limiting PACE center interactions
  • Instruction on Part D drugs and access controls

In other news…

As the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to spread across the nation, it’s clear that more and more healthcare workers will be called on to help battle the outbreak.

That’s why the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has asked clinicians to consider delaying “all elective surgeries, non-essential medical, surgical, and dental procedures” to “preserve personal protective equipment (PPE), beds, and ventilators,” notes a March 18 release.

In addition to pushing back non-essential procedures, CMS urges the public to stay at home unless there’s an emergency to safeguard the greater population. The combination of delaying elective, non-essential care and remaining safely at home will also allow clinicians to focus on patients struggling with the virus.

“The reality is clear, and the stakes are high: we need to preserve personal protective equipment for those on the front lines of this fight,” cautions CMS Administrator Seema Verma in the release.
