Confirmation hearings continue on Capitol Hill for President Trump’s nominees in various federal departments and state programs. However, a little progress was made this week toward filling the position of CMS Administrator.
Nominee Seema Verma passed the first round in the Senate Finance Committee’s hearing on March 2, 2017. The committee vote of 13 to 12, which fell along party lines with the Republicans taking the upper hand, pushes Verma to a full Senate vote for the final confirmation in the coming weeks.
Verma, who runs Indianapolis-based consulting firm SVC Inc., has worked closely with Medicaid in Indiana and is the architect of a popular program there that expands benefits to the poorest citizens through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
The position of CMS Administrator is an important one as it involves the management of both Medicare and Medicaid, the implementation of various programs and initiatives, and the coverage of over 100 million beneficiaries.
