OIG Continues to Turn Up the Notch on Prescription Drug Offenders

As the opioid-abuse epidemic threatens to undermine Medicare, the OIG maintains its vigilance in bringing providers to justice, who abuse the system.

In a recent case, a Georgia podiatrist and her office manager were charged with the unlawful distribution of 116,500 oxycodone 30mg pills, 41,800 hydromorphone 8mg pills, and 400 fentanyl patches at clinics throughout Georgia over a nine-month period in 2014 and 2015. The case remains under investigation by both the DEA and the HHS with the civil and criminal charges pending.

“Health care fraud and the abuse of prescription medications are increasing threats to our local communities,” said Derrick L. Jackson, HHS Special Agent-in-Charge for the OIG in Atlanta in a Department of Justice (DOJ) press release. “HHS-OIG continues to focus resources on those who divert prescription medication for profit and abuse. Our criminal investigators will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to bring the responsible individuals to justice.”
