Corrections’ requests for resubmitted claims are becoming a problem, one Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) says. “Resubmissions of previously processed claims requesting a correction to the claim” are on the rise, indicates the Part B MAC Novitas Solutions. The Medicare carrier advises practices to not add a cover letter to their correspondences, “highlight or circle” pieces of the claim, or input “extraneous statements” to the submission. These unnecessary additions don’t help the resubmission process, but rather impede it. “Requests received with these errors will be interpreted as indications that you may be seeking an adjustment or an appeal, and the receipts will be returned to you to file a proper request for adjustment or appeal,” the MAC warns. Before resubmitting a claim, Novitas suggests that providers and their staffs revisit the MAC’s documentation advice. Warning: The MAC will return incorrectly submitted claims received on and/or after May 1, 2019 as unprocessable.
