If you haven’t started transitioning your practice from using Health Insurance Claims Numbers (HICNs) to the new Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs), you’re behind the curve. According to the latest statistics from the week of June 14, 75 percent of Medicare providers are using MBIs for their fee-for-service claims, an MLN Connects release indicates. Reminder: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) instituted its new Medicare card initiative to replace Social Security Numbers on beneficiaries’ cards with the randomly selected, 11-character MBI to combat the rising issue of identity theft. The agency urges providers to use the new MBIs immediately when billing Medicare and to “use the transition period to make sure your systems can accept and transmit MBIs,” states CMS guidance. >The transition period ends on Dec. 31, 2019.
