Industry Note:

Major Changes Are Ahead As the HHS Transitions Under a New Administration

With President Obama now gone and President Trump taking up residency in the White House, healthcare changes abound as federal appointments take effect that impact Medicare and the industry.

Here are a two of the nominations under review in the U.S. Senate:

  • Tom Price, MD. Dr. Price is currently a member of the U.S. House of Representative for the state of Georgia, where he chairs the House budget committee, and is up for the position of HHS secretary. Price practiced orthopaedic surgery in Atlanta for 20 years as well as teaching medicine at Emory University before entering public life.
  • Seema Verma. Ms. Verma is the founder, CEO and president of the health policy consulting firm of SVC, Inc. She has been nominated as the next CMS administrator by President Trump. Verma has worked closely with many midwestern states, revising their Medicaid policies, particularly in the state of Indiana, where she spearheaded and designed the Health Indiana Plan under Medicaid.

Endnote. Dr. Patrick Conway, who was the deputyCMS administrator and chief medical officer under Andy Slavitt, will be the acting CMS administrator in the interim while Dr. John White, a seasoned policymaker, will be covering the ONC until an appointment is made.
