If you’re struggling to meet the demands of the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS), CMS offers avenues for hardship exceptions. There are currently two categories for hardship exception. If you are unable to report measures under the Promoting Interoperability (PI) performance category, you can submit an application. The process includes an application, review and approval, with the end result a reweighting of MIPS PI to 0 percent. The other reason for submitting a hardship exception is due to “extreme and uncontrollable circumstances.” These “are defined as rare events (highly unlikely to occur in a given year) entirely outside your control and the facility in which you practice,” notes CMS. End date: The application will close on Dec. 31, 2018 for Performance Year (PY) 2018. Find the link to the application at https://qpp.cms.gov/mips/exception-applications.
