HOSPITALS:

There's More Than 1 Way To Get NPI Application

July 1 marked beginning of paper mail option.

Providers that prefer the good old U.S. Post Office to the impersonal world of cyberspace should take note: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services now offers another option for hospitals to get applications for national provider identifiers in anticipation of the submission date.

Bottom line: Providers can now apply for NPI in two ways: online at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov; and by mail in a paper application form. (This option became available July 1.)

Hold Off On Submitting NPI App

Remember that providers cannot yet submit applications, even though experts recommend getting copies of NPI applications ASAP. Providers can submit applications beginning in the fall of 2005.
