Health care organizations, take note: The HHS Office of Civil Rights March 20 laid out the process patients who feel that their privacy rights have been violated should follow to lodge formal complaints. In a notice published in the Federal Register, the OCR explains that people who think a health care provider has run afoul of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act privacy rules need to submit their gripes, in writing, to the OCR regional office in their area. The complaints must name the allegedly wayward provider and describe the purported HIPAA violation. OCR officials will then be empowered to investigate.
