MRA COVERAGE EXPANDS

Health care providers will soon have more opportunities to collect Medicare reimbursement for magnetic resonance angiography.

In an April 15 decision memorandum, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says it plans to issue a national coverage determination expanding Medicare coverage for MRA. Currently, Medicare covers MRA for patients with vascular diseases of the pelvis only when there is damage to the wall of the aorta. MRA is a non-invasive diagnostic test that uses magnetic resonance imaging.

Under the new coverage policy, Medicare would also cover MRA to evaluate renal arteries and pelvic arteries in patients without a damaged aorta. Catheter angiography in addition to MRA would also be covered when clinically warranted.
