The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently outlined the following four standards for adult immunization:
1. Assess immunization status of all your patients in every clinical encounter. To stay current on CDC recommendations, bookmark and visit seasonally www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/adult.html.
2. Recommend to your patients the vaccines they need. Don’t neglect to educate patients about the potential costs of getting the diseases vaccines protect against.
3. Administer needed vaccines or refer your patients to a provider who can immunize them.
4. Document vaccines received by your patients. The best way is by participating in your state’s immunization registry. That way, your patients’ other providers can be in-the-know.
