The following bills were introduced in the Senate:

S. 1489. A bill to amend the Public Health Service Act with regard to research on asthma, and for other purposes. Introduced July 26 by Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and referred to the Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.

S. 1503. A bill to reduce health care costs, expand access to affordable health care coverage, and improve health care and strengthen the health care safety net, and for other purposes. Introduced July 26 by Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) and referred to the Committee on Finance.

The following bills were introduced in the House:

H.R. 3435. A bill to amend title II of the Social Security Act to establish a Social Security Surplus Protection Account in the Federal Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund to hold the Social Security surplus, to provide for suspension of investment of amounts held in the account until enactment of legislation providing for investment of the fund in investment vehicles other than obligations of the United States, and to establish a Social Security Investment Commission to make recommendations for alternative forms of investment of the Social Security surplus in the fund. Introduced July 26 by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.

H.R. 3437. A bill to amend titles XVIII and XIX of the Social Security Act with respect to reform of federal survey and certification process of nursing facilities under the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Introduced July 26 by Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) and referred to the Committee on Ways and Means.
