Advancing Care Information:

How to Earn Maximum Points in the MIPS Scoring System

You must report a ‘yes’ attestation for patient data security.

As the Meaningful Use program is tossed out and replaced with the new Advancing Care Information program, your scoring will change as well. Here’s an overview of how the new proposed scoring will work.

You need to earn a total of 100 points in the Advancing Care Information category to receive the full 25 points toward your overall Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) score. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will calculate your Advancing Care Information score by adding up your “base score,” “performance score,” and “bonus point.”

Base Score: The base score accounts for 50 points. Except for the Protect Patient Information objective, you simply need to report a numerator/denominator or yes/no for each of the following objectives and measures to receive a base score:

  1. Protect Patient Health Information (yes/no — yes required)
  2. Electronic Prescribing (numerator/denominator)
  3. Patient Electronic Access (numerator/denominator)
  4. Coordination of Care Through Patient Engagement (numerator/denominator)
  5. Health Information Exchange (numerator/denominator)
  6. Public Health and Clinical Data Registry Reporting (yes/no)

Performance Score: Your performance score accounts for up to 80 points toward the total. You can select the measures that best fit your practice from the following objectives:

  1. Patient Electronic Access
  2. Coordination of Care Through Patient Engagement
  3. Health Information Exchange

Bonus Point: Although immunization registry reporting is required, you can earn one additional point for reporting to other public health registries, beyond the immunization category.

Total Score: CMS will add your base score, performance score, and bonus point to earn a total of up to 131 points. If your score is 100 points or more, you will receive the full 25 points in the Advancing Care Information category, which will go toward your overall MIPS score. If you receive fewer than 100 points, your overall MIPS score will lower proportionately (scoring is not all-or-nothing).
