In Vol. 11, No. 2 of Internal Medicine Coding Alert, the answer to "You Be the Coder: Choosing Initial Infusion Type" contained inaccurate information.
The "Answer" portion stated that you should report the following codes for the infusion session: 90765 (Intravenous infusion, for therapy, prophylaxis, or diagnosis [specify substance or drug]; initial, up to 1 hour), +90766 (… each additional hour [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]) and +90767 (... additional sequential infusion, up to 1 hour [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]).
However, because the initial infusion was for chemotherapy, you should actually report these codes for the encounter:
• 96413 (Chemotherapy administration, intravenous infusion technique; up to 1 hour, single or initial substance/drug) for the first hour of chemotherapy
• +96415 (… each additional hour [list separately in addition to code for primary procedure]) for the remaining chemotherapy time
• +90767 for the antibiotic infusion.
