Reader Question:

Look at 320 for Radiology Revenue Code

Question: What is the appropriate revenue code for procedures our outpatient center would report with 73030 and 73050? We’re only billing for the technical/facility component of the X-ray the physician is interpreting.

Answer: The most typical revenue code is 320 (Radiology -- diagnostic -- general).

Other info: Revenue codes are basically another code set that hospitals and outpatient facilities report in conjunction with their line-items charges on the UB-04. The revenue codes are generally embedded in the hospital’s chargemaster. These codes tell either where the patient was when he received treatment (such as, operating room with revenue code 0360) or what type of service or item the patient received as part of his care (such as, intraocular lens for cataract surgery with revenue code 0276). Revenue codes are required for filing the UB-04 claim form, that is, each line-item must have a revenue code. The use of revenue codes by Medicare and other third-party payers can be quite variable. Chargemaster coordinators spend considerable time selecting revenue codes and meeting specific requirements from different third-party payers.
