Laparoscopic Salpingectomy Reverts to Open Code

Question: I’m coding for a patient who had a laparoscopic salpingectomy, but am not finding supporting codes in Volume 3 of ICD-9-CM. What should I report?

Answer: Volume 3 does not include specific code assignments for laparoscopic salpingectomy, which means your code assignment defaults to the open approach. Your choices include:

  • 66.4 – Total unilateral salpingectomy
  • 66.51 – Removal of both fallopian tubes at same operative episode (for bilateral total salpingectomy)
  • 66.69 – Other partial salpingectomy (for partial/subtotal unilateral)
  • 66.63 – Bilateral partial salpingectomy, not otherwise specified
  • 66.52 – Removal of remaining/solitary fallopian tube.

Approach note: If the surgeon performed the procedure with robotic assistance, you’ll include an additional code as a secondary procedure:

  • 17.41 – Open robotic assisted procedure; or
  • 17.42 – Laparoscopic robotic assisted procedure.
