Question: Do all the hospitals have to comply with the HAC-POA reporting to get reimbursed properly and avoid denials?

Answer: The Present on Admission (POA) codes only need to be reported by IPPS hospitals. Facilities such as these are exempt from the provision:

• Critical Access Hospitals
• Long Term Care Hospitals
• Cancer Hospitals
• Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities
• Inpatient Psychiatric Facilities
• Children Inpatient Facilities.

Note that there may be state level requirements for reporting POA. While POA reporting is really a Medicare requirement for IPPS, other third-party payers may also require it regardless of your type of facility.
