Reader Question:

Device Key Simplifies Choosing Character 6 Under PCS

Question: My physician inserted a “sirolimus-eluting coronary stent.” How should I classify this device in ICD-10-PCS?

California Subscriber

Answer: You should characterize this device as an intraluminal device, drug-eluting in heart and great vessels.

Remember: To understand “extraluminal” versus “intraluminal,” you need to know what lumen means. The lumen is the inside space of a tubular structure, such as an artery or intestine. An extraluminal device works on the outside of the lumen, such as the clipping of a cerebral aneurysm. An intraluminal device means that the device is within the lumen, such as within a blood vessel.

If you’re confused about classifying your device, you can always check the “Device Key,” which is an appendix in ICD-10-PCS.
