ICD 10 Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Start With Z87.2 for Atypical Nevus Diagnosis

Question: I can’t seem to find a clear diagnosis code for personal history of atypical nevus. What am I missing?

Answer: An atypical nevus is not malignant, so you won’t find a specific V code in ICD-9, as would be the case in a personal history of malignant neoplasm (Z85.-).

To report a personal history of the condition, Z87.2 (Personal history of diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue) could be a viable possibility. Or if that doesn’t seem appropriate, consider Z87.898 (Personal history of other specified conditions) and include documentation explaining the situation.
