ICD 10 Coding Alert

Reader Question:

Check Out Seventh Digits for Extravasation

Question: I need to report chemotherapy extravasation. Should I report 996.1 (mechanical complication)? Massachusetts Subscriber Answer: The appropriate ICD-9-CM code is 999.81 (Extravasation of vesicant chemotherapy). Extravasation means the substance passes out of a vessel. The term vesicant in the code definition refers to chemotherapy treatment with a drug that can cause tissue damage and necrosis if drug extravasation occurs. For example, the IV catheter may slip out of the vein or the needle in an implantable port may become dislodged. ICD-10-CM: The corresponding ICD-10-CM code for this diagnosis is T80.810- (Extravasation of vesicant antineoplastic chemotherapy). You'll need to add a seventh character: A, initial encounter D, subsequent encounter S, sequela.
