ICD 10 Coding Alert

Question: I’ve been using code F50.8- pretty regularly for years, but I tried to use it on a claim recently and it was denied. What’s going on?

Answer: When ICD-10-CM codes were updated in 2024, that code became obsolete. So, it makes sense that the code worked until recently: the change didn’t go into effect until Oct. 1, 2024.

You now need a 6^th character for the code that describes binge eating. Here are some options:

• F50.810 (Binge eating disorder, mild)
• F50.811 (Binge eating disorder, moderate)
• F50.812 (Binge eating disorder, severe)
• F50.813 (Binge eating disorder, extreme)
• F50.814 (Binge eating disorder, in remission)
• F50.819 (Binge eating disorder, unspecified)

Remember to stay on top of code updates so you’re using the correct, accurate codes at the time you submit your claims. Annual ICD-10-CM code changes go into effect on October 1 of every year, so consider adding an alert to your calendar to make sure you access the most updated information.
