San Diego Hospice’s inpatient facility has gone to the highest bidder. After 50 bids in bankruptcy court between Scripps Health and Sharp HealthCare, Scripps won with a $16.56 million bid for the eight-acre, hilltop property with an ocean view, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.
San Diego Hospice declared bankruptcy in February after revealing a Medicare audit focusing on patients’ eligibility for the Medicare hospice benefit. The property includes a 24-bed hospice and several administrative buildings.
The facility was built with an $18.5 million donation from the late Joan Kroc, according to the Union-Tribune. If they won, both Scripps and Sharp pledged to preserve the numerous memorials throughout the buildings and along a perimeter garden walking path.
Sharp serves about 430 hospice patients per day and newcomer Scripps about 200, the newspaper says.
