The founder of now-shuttered Passages Hospice in Lisle, Ill., had pleaded guilty to Medicare fraud. Under owner Seth Gillman, Passages billed Medicare for medically unnecessary General Inpatient care and kept ineligible patients on service, sometimes for years.
Former Passages nursing director Carmen Velez has also pleaded guilty in the case. Velez admitted to altering patient records to reflect a need for GIP before audit, according to press reports.
