In ICD-10, most psych diagnoses will be found in Chapter 5 — Mental, Behavioral, and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. These codes will start with the letter F. To remember this location, “think of ‘Freud’ for Sigmund Freud,” suggests Teresa Northcutt, BSN, RN, COS-C, HCS-D, AHIMA Approved ICD-10-CM Trainer with Denton, Texas-based Selman-Holman & Associates.
The new chapter for psych condition codes isn’t the only change you’ll notice with these ICD-10 diagnoses. As with most of ICD-10, “there is much more specificity, designed to be more in line with the new release of the DSM manual,” Griffin says.
And ICD-10 will require more detailed information when coding many conditions, Northcutt says. For example: Alzheimer’s disease will require physician documentation of “early onset” or “late onset” to select the most specific code. Recommend the intake department request this information when gathering the referral information, she suggests.
