READER QUESTIONS:

Don't Use These V Codes Together

Question: We admit many patients with hip fractures who have had open reductions. How do we best use V codes to reflect the care we provide to these patients?

Answer: V54.13 (Aftercare for healing traumatic fracture of hip) indicates aftercare for a healing fracture and includes fractures that require surgical intervention. In this case, you would not code V58.43 (Aftercare following surgery for injury and trauma) because the V58.4 code specifically excludes the V54 orthopedic aftercare codes.
