Question: Which aftercare code is best suited for a joint revision due to a failed knee or hip? Answer: You must code the complication or malfunction of the device (996.0-996.7) in addition to reporting the appropriate aftercare code, V54.81 (Aftercare following joint replacement). Be careful not to leave out the malfunction/complication code, or it will appear as though this was a standard joint replacement surgery.
