Heed This CMS Tip On New Q Codes For Billing

Are you coding correctly according to this new July 1 requirement?

Home health agencies got some clarity on using site of service codes in the latest Open Door Forum for home care providers.

HHAs are confused about using the new Q codes that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services required as of July 1, reported Colleen Bayard with the Home Care Alliance of Massachusetts in the July 9 forum.

Reminder: HHAs now must use Q5001 (Hospice or home health care provided in patient’s home/residence); Q5002 (…in assisted living facility); or Q5009 (…in place not otherwise specified) to indicate where they furnish services.

Question: HCAM members want to know which codes to use for group homes, shelters, and other congregant living situations, Bayard told CMS.

Answer: For group homes that are associated with an ALF, code Q5002 for ALF, Loeffler advised. Otherwise just use Q5001 for home. When the patient is in a shelter, then Q5009 would be appropriate, Loeffler added.
