Physician Home Care Payments Cut 10 Percent

Physicians may be more apt to rely on home care companies to do home visits now that Medicare will be paying them less for venturing out of the office. Medicare payment rates for two physician home visit codes, 99348 and 99350, will drop about 10 percent to $66.60 and $152.94, respectively, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services says in its draft regulation for the 2004 Physician Fee Schedule. CMS also has added new HCPCS codes for home cardiac telemetry monitoring. Physicians can bill GXXX1 through GXXX4 when a patient with heart arrhythmias is discharged to home care and the doc monitors them via a home telemetry station connecting to a monitoring station by phone. v Editor's Note: The draft regulation is at http://cms.hhs.gov/physicians/.
