The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has agreed to continue to provide home care for an Oregon veteran with Lou Gehrig’s disease who sued the VA when it threatened to halt his 24/7 care, reports The Oregonian newspaper. Michael Williamson sued the VA on Jan. 23 after a VA contract company notified him that his home care of nearly 17 years would halt on Feb. 13 because it couldn’t find caregivers. The local VA told Williamson they had no other approved home care agencies in the area and that he would have to move to a nursing home, according to the Oregonian. Attorneys from Disability Rights Oregon argued that the VA’s initial action violated its own regulations, which direct the department to offer a choice of providers and provide continuity of care, the newspaper says.
