Reader Question:

Beware Billing Snarls Due To MSP Glitch

Watch out for a lag in MSP information for your patients — and related billing problems.

The problem: “We are experiencing issues related to the Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP) information provided via our self-service tools, NGSConnex and the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system,” HHH Medicare Administrative Contractor National Government Services said in a Nov. 7 email to providers. “The information provided may not be the most current information available in the Common Working File (CWF).”

“The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has identified an issue with obtaining current MSP information via the HIPAA Eligibility Transaction System (HETS),” MAC CGS said in a Nov. 6 email. “This affects MSP information available in myCGS, and the interactive voice response (IVR) system.”

The solution: While you’re waiting on a fix, you can “contact the Medicare beneficiary to confirm you have the most current MSP information,” NGS suggests. Otherwise, hang tight for an update.
