Publicly Traded HHA Chains Report Increased Earnings

• Investigations into therapy provision by The Wall Street Journal, U.S. Senate, Securities and Exchange Commission, Department of Jus-tice, and others don't seem to be impacting LHC Group Inc.'s earnings much.

The Lafayette, La.-based national chain reported net income of $17.1 million on revenues of $166.6 million for the quarter ended Sept. 30. That's compared to a $12.7 million profit on $132.9 million in revenues for the same period in 2009.

LHC also has entered into a joint venture with Rockcastle Regional Hospital and Respir-atory Care Center in Mount Vernon, Ky. to furnish home care services in Rockcastle County, it says in a release. And LHC has acquired the assets of Hospital and Healthcare Services Home Health located in Salem, Ky. and North Idaho Home Health in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho.

Fellow target of investigation Almost Family Inc. also fared relatively well for the quarter. The Louisville, Ky.-based publicly traded chain reported net income of $7.9 million on revenues of $89.4 million, up 11 percent and 29 percent, respectively, over the year-ago quarter.

Almost Family also acquired the assets of the Medicare-certified HHA owned by Fayette County Memorial Hospital in Washington Court House, Ohio, the Louisville, Ky.-based chain says in a release. The acquired agency generates about $600,000 in annual revenues.
