Mergers & Acquisitions:

Rough Reimbursement Seas For HHAs Could Encourage Increased M&A Activity

Major home care industry consolidation is ahead, CEO predicts.

Is it time for you to jump ship? That’s what one prominent home care executive expects to see in the near future.

"We expect the release of the final home health reimbursement rule and rebasing to provide greater clarity surrounding the long-term reimbursement environment," LHC Group Inc. says in its third quarter earnings release. "As a result, we believe a period of significant consolidation in the industry will occur over the next several years."

For example: Almost Family Inc. announced it will acquire Madison, Tenn.-based SunCrest HealthCare for an undisclosed amount. SunCrest operates more than 75 locations in nine states and generates $150 million in annual revenues, Almost Family says in a separate release. SunCrest has a large presence in Tennessee and Florida.

After the acquisition, Almost Family will operate 240 locations in 14 states and expects its revenues to approach the $500 million mark — likely passing longtime industry heavyweight Gentiva.
