Mergers & Acquisitions:

Hospitals Shed Hospice, Home Care Units

Competition squeezes out non-specialists.

It’s not all acquisitions and mergers, though. Rough market conditions are leading to some closures as well:

• In Pennsylvania, Commonwealth Health, which runs Regional Hospital of Scranton and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital, will end its hospice services on June 30. “The volume of patients served has become so small that we cannot sustain the service,” the health system says, according to WNEP News. Commonwealth will also consolidate hospice services in Berwick.

• In New Mexico, Memorial Medical Center is shuttering its home health unit June 30, reports the Las Cruces Sun-News. “Reimbursements do not adequately support the provision of home health services regardless of patient care volume,” a hospital exec told the newspaper.
