You have until Feb. 11 to give the feds a piece of your mind on HIPAA modifications. In an effort to appease calls from the healthcare community to lessen the restraints of HIPAA, the HHS Office for Civil Rights issued a Request for Information on ideas to modify the Privacy Rule. “This RFI is another crucial step in our Regulatory Sprint to Coordinated Care, which is taking a close look at how regulations like HIPAA can be finetuned to incentivize care coordination and improve patient care, while ensuring that we fulfill HIPAA’s promise to protect privacy and security,” says Eric Hargan, HHS Deputy Secretary, in an OCR release. The agency is also asking for the public’s thoughts on the opioid crisis and HIPAA, parental input in care situations, and information sharing to better improve treatment, the release suggests. The RFI and instructions for comment submissions are in the Dec. 14 Federal Register at www.federalregister.gov/documents/2018/12/14/2018-27162/request-for-information-on-modifyinghipaa-rules-to-improve-coordinated-care.
