The feds’ crackdown on Medicaid home care fraud continues. On Dec. 13, a federal grand jury indicted 14 St. Louis area individuals on Medicare and Medicaid fraud charges, according to press reports. All but one of the defendants were out of the country when either the caregiver claimed to be providing services or the client claimed to be receiving them, according to the Department of Justice. A fifteenth person pleaded guilty to making false statements and admitted to traveling while saying she received home care, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Patient Salwa Albayati would split the aide payment with the aides, the new charges say. A tip that some Iraqis were fraudulently receiving home care services sparked the investigation, the Post-Dispatch says. Investigators compared billing records with international travel, identifying suspects and four home care companies whose employees were believed to be committing fraud.
