Industry Notes:

UnitedHealth To Make Monster Home Health & Hospice Acquisition

Another big insurer to pay big bucks for home health and hospice chain.

UnitedHealth Group plans to buy LHC Group Inc. for about $5.4 billion, marking the second time in as many years that a major insurer is entering the home health and hospice market with a blockbuster acquisition.

Reminder: Humana Inc. bought Kindred at Home in two phases for $8.1 billion. The transaction was finalized last year.

Eden Prairie, Minnesota-based UnitedHealth will merge Lafayette, Louisiana-based LHC Group with its Optum health services division. “LHC Group’s history of high-quality home and community-based care matched with Optum’s extensive value-based care experience and resources will accelerate the combined companies’ ability to deliver integrated care, improving outcomes and patient experiences,” the companies say in a joint release.

The LHC Group leadership team will continue forward as part of Optum Health, according to the release. LHC operates from 964 locations in 37 states and the District of Columbia with about 30,000 employees, it says.
