The feds may seem to be hammering for-profit hospices, but non-profits are getting their share of attention too.
For example: The OIG reviewed claims from Servicios Suplementarios de Salud Inc., a nonprofit hospice operating in Puerto Rico. Of the 100 claims it reviewed from the 2008-to-2010 time period, the OIG found that 18 did not comply with Medicare requirements.
Problems including missing or inadequate election and revocation documents, lack of documentation supporting eligibility, and lack of documentation supporting certain services provided, the OIG says in the report at https://oig.hhs.gov/oas/reports/region2/21101017.asp.
The hospice agreed with the OIG on 13 of the claims, and submitted a corrective action plan back in 2012, it says in comments on the report. However, SSS maintains that five of the records did have adequate documentation.
