The majority of the 150 million rapid response coronavirus tests the federal government is buying from Abbott Labs will go to support school reopenings, but a chunk will be earmarked for home health agencies too. So said Admiral Brett Giroir, the head of U.S. Covid-19 testing and the assistant secretary for health at the Department of Health and Human Services, according to press reports. The tests are supposed to return results in 15 minutes and cost $5 each.
“By strategically distributing 150 million of these tests to where they’re needed most, we can track the virus like never before and protect millions of Americans at risk in especially vulnerable situations,” HHS Secretary Alex Azar said in announcing the initiative. Next step: The National Association for Home Care & Hospice “is in discussion with senior HHS officials to advocate for home health agencies and to urge home care agencies to be included, as well” in the rapid test distribution, the trade group says. NAHC is also lobbying to have all frontline healthcare workers, including in hospice and private duty, included in future vaccination allocation.
