If you want to get a closer look at the instructions for the PECOS physician edits your claims started undergoing last week, check out a newly updated transmittal. The edits require the referring/ordering physician field to have a valid National Provider Identifier from a referring physician who is enrolled in Medicare's PECOS system. Don't forget that during phase 2 of the edits, which begins in January, your claims will be rejected for lacking a valid, PECOS-enrolled physician's NPI, CMS says in CR 6856 updated Sept. 28.
